Phenytoin Sodium (Eptoheal 100) 100 mg tablet is a hydantoin derivative with a narrow therapeutic index and is one of the most commonly used anticonvulsants. It is also used for several other indications, such as bipolar disorder, retina protection, and wound healing.

How To Take
This medicine should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not open/chew/crush.
For patients on nasogastric or other enteral feeds, do not administer feeds 2 hours before or after a dose. Be consistent throughout therapy concerning feed times.
Dosage of Phenytoin Sodium (Eptoheal 100) 100 mg
Adult Dosage for Seizures: Divided daily dosage: For oral capsules, patients who have received no previous treatment may start on 300 mg daily, be taken in three equally divided doses, and the dosage then adjusted to suit individual requirements. For most adults, the satisfactory maintenance dosage will be 300 mg to 400 mg daily, to be taken in three to four equally divided doses. An increase up to 600 mg daily may be made if necessary.
Pediatric Dosage for Seizures: For oral capsules, initially 5 mg/kg/day in two or three equally divided doses, with subsequent dosage individualized to a maximum of 300 mg daily. A recommended daily maintenance dosage is usually 4 mg/kg to 8 mg/kg. Children over six years, and adolescents may require the minimum adult dose (300 mg/day). If the daily dosage cannot be divided equally, the more massive dose should be given at bedtime.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not double a dose under any circumstances.
Overdose of Phenytoin Sodium (Eptoheal 100) 100 mg
The initial symptoms are;
- Nystagmus
- Ataxia
- Dysarthria
- Tremor
- Hyperflexia
- Lethargy
- Slurred speech
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- May become comatose,
- Hypotensive
- Severely confused
- Dizzy or drowsy
- Unusually tired or weak

Contraindications
People with the following medical conditions should not take Phenytoin Sodium:
- Hypersensitivity
- Sinus bradycardia
- Sino-atrial block
- AV block or Stokes Adams syndrome

How Does Phenytoin Sodium (Eptoheal 100) 100 mg Work?
Phenytoin sodium exerts its anticonvulsant effects by inhibiting the spread of seizure activity in the motor cortex. Epileptic seizures are thought to occur through the development of excessive central excitability due to post-tetanic potentiation, which is blocked by Phenytoin.
Uses
Phenytoin Sodium is used to treat the following conditions:
- Control of status epilepticus
- Tonic-clonic (grand mal)

Special Precautions and Connected Warnings
Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity
- Possibility of increased seizure when abruptly discontinued
- Caution in patients receiving structurally similar compounds (e.g., barbiturates, succinimides, oxazolidinediones & other related compounds)
- Exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome & toxic epidermal necrolysis
- Increased suicidal thoughts or behavior
- Diabetic patients
- Renal & hepatic impairment
- May impair ability to drive or operate machinery
- Pregnancy & lactation
Storage Conditions
- Phenytoin Sodium should be stored below 25°C and protected from light.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
- Do not use Phenytoin that is expired or out of date.
