How To Take Torsemide (Torseheal 40) 40 mg tablet

This medicine may be taken with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

You may need to pass urine more often while being treated with Torasemide. Take it early in the day, preferably in the morning, to avoid waking up frequently at night to go to the toilet.

Torasemide must be taken regularly for it to work well. Continue taking Torasemide even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

Take Torsemide precisely as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage of Torsemide (Torseheal 40) 40 mg

Adult: Hypertension: 2.5-5 mg once daily. Maximum dose of 5 mg/day. 

Edema: 5 mg once daily, up to 20 mg once daily if needed. Maximum dose of  40 mg/day. 

Edema in patients with hepatic cirrhosis: Initial: 5-10 mg once daily, with an aldosterone antagonist or a K-sparing diuretic, titrate upwards till desired diuretic response. Maximum dose of 40 mg/day. 

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose 

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Marked diuresis with severe dehydration and electrolytes disturbances
  • Somnolence 
  • Confusion
  • Hypotension
  • Circulatory collapse 
  • GI disturbances

Seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Torsemide:

  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonylureas 
  • Renal failure with anuria
  • Hepatic coma and pre-coma
  • Hypotension 
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Side Effects

Torsemide may have the following side effects:

Warnings

Do not use Torsemide in people with the following conditions:

  • Indomethacin

Torsemide is a sulfonylurea loop diuretic that acts from within the lumen of the thick ascending portion of Henle’s loop in the kidney, where it inhibits the sodium/potassium/chloride-carrier system.

Special Precautions and Connected Warnings

Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:

  • Risk of hyperuricemia 
  • Gout and diabetes mellitus
  • Correct electrolyte disturbances and disorders of micturition before treatment. Monitor electrolyte balance, glucose, uric acid, creatinine, and lipids regularly. May impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.
  • Your doctor may give you potassium supplements while you are being treated with Torasemide. Alternatively, he may tell you to take more foods that are high in potassium, such as orange juice, bananas, or prunes.
  • Avoid alcohol.
