How To Take

This medicine should be taken at least 30 minutes before the main meals.

It may be necessary for you to take this medicine for a long time, such as for a few years. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment time frame.

Take Repaglinide precisely as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage  of Repaglinide 0.5 mg (Hirepa 0.5) 0.5 mg

Adult: As monotherapy or combined with metformin: Initial: 0.5 mg. Patient transferring from another hypoglycemic agent: Initial: 1mg. All doses are taken 30 minutes before each main meal. May adjust dose at intervals of 1-2 weeks, up to max 4 mg/dose. Maximum dose of 16 mg/day.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose of Repaglinide 0.5 mg (Hirepa 0.5) 0.5 mg

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Hypoglycemic reactions (e.g. dizziness, sweating, tremor, headache, seizure, loss of consciousness or coma) 

Seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Repaglinide:

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis with or without coma
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus
  • Concomitant use with gemfibrozil.

Repaglinide may have the following side effects:

  • Severe hypoglycemia
  • Acute coronary syndrome (e.g. MI).

How Does Repaglinide 0.5 mg (Hirepa 0.5) 0.5 mg  Work?

Repaglinide is a short-acting meglitinide analogue which lowers blood glucose by inhibiting the ATP-dependent potassium channels in the beta-cell membrane, resulting in depolarization. By this, it leads to the opening of calcium channels, resulting in a calcium influx that stimulates the insulin release from the pancreatic beta-cells.
