How To Take

This medicine may be taken with or without food.

Do not take Disulfiram if you have consumed alcohol in the last 12 hours.

Take Disulfiram precisely as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage

Adult: 800 mg as a single dose on the 1st day, reduced by 200 mg/day. Maintenance: 100-200 mg/day.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose 

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Nausea

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Disulfiram:

  • Heart failure

  • History of stroke

  • Psychosis or severe personality disorders
  • Patients receiving metronidazole, paraldehyde, alcohol or alcohol-containing preparations (e.g., cough syrups, tonics) or alcohol-based topical preparations

Potentially Fatal:

  • Severe hepatitis and hepatic failure

Warnings

Do not use Disulfiram in people with the following conditions:

  • Allergic reactions to this medicine or any of its contents, and thiuram compounds such as those used rubber vulcanization and pesticides.
  • Heart failure
  • Blocked arteries in the heart
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • History of stroke
  • Mental illness, e.g., severe personality disorder, thoughts of self-harm

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:

  • Alcohol containing preparations
  • Aspirin
  • Warfarin
  • Amitriptyline
  • Chlorpromazine
  • Chlordiazepoxide
  • Diazepam

How Does It Work?

Disulfiram is an aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor, the oxidative enzyme of acetaldehyde, a metabolite of alcohol accumulated in the blood, thereby producing unpleasant symptoms of disulfiram-alcohol reaction when a patient has taken small amounts of alcohol.
