Rifaximin (Rifaxiheal 550) 550 mg tablet is a semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic used to treat traveller’s diarrhea caused by E. coli bacteria or diarrhea caused by irritable bowel syndrome.

How To Take Rifaximin (Rifaxiheal 550) 550 mg
This medicine may be taken with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take Rifaximin at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don’t, the infection will not be appropriately controlled.
Take Rifaximin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Dosage of Rifaximin (Rifaxiheal 550) 550 mg
Adult: Traveller’s diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of E. coli: 200 mg three times a day for three days.
Hepatic encephalopathy; To reduce risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence: 550 mg twice a day.
Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea: 550 mg three times a day for 14 days, retreat up to 2 times if symptoms recur.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not double a dose under any circumstances.
Overdose
If you think you may have used Rifaximin more than the usual dose, please seek medical help immediately.
Contraindications
People with the following medical conditions should not take Rifaximin:
- Hypersensitivity
- Intestinal obstruction
- Diarrhoea with fever and blood in the stool
- Diarrhoea caused by pathogens Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp., and Salmonella spp.
Side Effects
Rifaximin may have the following side effects:
- Superinfection (e.g. C. difficile-associated diarrhoea)
- Anemia
- Dyspnea
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Peripheral edema
- Muscle spasm
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Depression
- Nasopharyngitis
- Pruritus
- Epistaxis
Warnings
Do not use Rifaximin in people with the following conditions:
- Diarrhea with fever
- Bloody diarrhea
- Blockage of the bowel
- Diarrhea caused by other bacteria
- as Rifaximin may not be suitable for you.
- Allergic reaction
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- Warfarin
- Ciclosporin
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and non-prescription medicines.

Rifaximin is a synthetic derivative of rifamycin which blocks the synthesis of bacterial RNA by irreversibly binding to the beta subunit of bacterial enzyme DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Special Precautions and Connected Warnings
Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:
- Patient with a systemic bacterial infection
- Severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C)
- Children
- Avoid alcohol
Storage Conditions
- Store between 20-25°C.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
- Do not use rifaximin that is expired or out of date.
