How To Take

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about whether you should take this medicine with or without food. Different preparations of this medicine may be made differently. Try to take it at the same time each day.

If you are taking the extended-release type of tablets (usually labelled as “XL”, “ER”), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablets.

Metoprolol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

Take Metoprolol precisely as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage of Metoprolol (Betablock 25 XL) 25 mg

Adult: Hypertension: Conventional tab: Initially, 100 mg daily as single or in 2 divided doses, may be increased weekly according to the response. Maintenance: 200 mg daily in divided doses. Extended-release tab: Initially, 25-100 mg daily, may be increased weekly according to the answer. Maximum of 400 mg/day. 

Angina pectoris: Conventional tab: 50-100 mg twice a day or three times a day. Extended-release: Initially, 100 mg daily, may be increased gradually at weekly intervals until a satisfactory response is achieved. Maximum of 400 mg/day. 

Heart failure: Extended-release tab: 12.5-25 mg once daily, may be increased gradually as tolerated, at intervals of 2 weeks. Max dose: 200 mg once daily. 

Cardiac arrhythmias: Conventional tab: 50 mg twice a day or three times a day, maybe increased to 300 mg daily in divided doses, as necessary. 

Adjunct in hyperthyroidism: Conventional tab: 50 mg four times a day, maybe reduced once the euthyroid state is achieved. Prophylaxis of Conventional migraine tab: 100-200 mg daily in divided doses.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose of Metoprolol (Betablock 25 XL) 25 mg

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Severe hypotension 
  • Sinus bradycardia 
  • Atrioventricular block 
  • Heart failure
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Bronchospasm 
  • Impairment of consciousness 
  • Coma
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Metoprolol:

  • 2nd or 3rd-degree atrioventricular block
  • Decompensated cardiac failure
  • Severe bradycardia
  • Sick-sinus syndrome (without pacemaker)
  • Untreated phaeochromocytoma
  • Severe peripheral arterial disease 
  • Cardiogenic shock

How Does Metoprolol (Betablock 25 XL) 25 mg Work?

Metoprolol selectively blocks beta 1-adrenergic receptors but has little or no effect on beta 2-receptors, except in high doses. It does not exhibit any effects in membrane stabilizing or intrinsic sympathomimetic activity.
