How To Take
This medicine may be taken with or without food.
If you are given the tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
Linezolid should be taken at regular intervals for it to be effective. Continue to take this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of antibiotics. If you don’t, the infection will not clear completely.
Take Linezolid precisely as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Dosage of Linezolid (Zyzolide 600) 600 mg
Adult: Uncomplicated skin infections: 400 mg 12 hourly for 10-14 days.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not double a dose under any circumstances.
Overdose of Linezolid (Zyzolide 600) 600 mg
If you think you may have used Linezolid more than the usual dose, please seek medical help immediately.
Contraindications
People with the following medical conditions should not take Linezolid:
- Unless facilities for close observation and BP monitoring
- Avoid use in patients with uncontrolled hypertension
- Pheochromocytoma
- Thyrotoxicosis
- Carcinoid syndrome
- Bipolar depression
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Acute confusional states
- Patients with gram negative bacterial infections
- Concomitant use with MAOIs or within two weeks of discontinuing MAOI; SSRIs, TCAs, selective serotonin- and norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), or other serotonergic drugs (e.g., bupropion, vilazodone, mirtazapine, amoxapine, buspirone, maprotiline, meperidine, trazodone, nefazodone)
- Dopamine
- Dobutamine
- Epinephrine
- Norepinephrine
- Pseudoephedrine
Side Effects
Linezolid may have the following side effects:
- Reversible myelosuppression (e.g., leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, pancytopenia)
- Headache
- Fever
- Convulsions and seizures
- Rashes
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Metallic taste
- Insomnia
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Skin disorder
- Cough
- Pharyngitis
- Upper resp tract infection
- Visual impairment (e.g., changes in visual acuity or color vision, visual field defect or blurred vision)
- Peripheral and optic neuropathy which progress to loss of vision
- Lactic acidosis
- Oral and vaginal candidiasis
- Superficial teeth and tongue discoloration and abnormal LFT.
Potentially Fatal:
- Serotonin syndrome
- Transient ischaemic attacks
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome
Warnings
Do not use Linezolid in people with the following conditions:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland)
- Mood disorders
- Thyroid problems
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- Isocarboxacid
- Phenelzine
- Tranylcypromine
- Pseudoephedrine
- Dextromethorphan
- Phenylpropanolamine
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and non-prescription medicines.
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Linezolid.
How Does Linezolid (Zyzolide 600) 600 mg Work?
Linezolid is a bacteriostatic oxazolidinone antibacterial drug that acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ribosomal protein. It is active against gram-positive bacteria, including vancomycin-resistant enterococci and MRSA, but has limited activity against gram-negative bacteria.
Uses
Linezolid is used to treat the following conditions:
- Uncomplicated skin infections
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium
- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Nosocomial pneumonia
- Complicated skin and skin structure infections
Special Precautions and Connected Warnings
Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:
- Patients with pre-existing myelosuppression
- History of seizure
- Diabetes mellitus
- Phenylketonuria
- Mixed (gram positive and gram negative) infections
- Severe renal impairment
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Avoid alcohol and other drinks that contain tyramine such as red wine and beer. Avoid foods that are high in tyramine, such as cheese, sausages, soya beans, fava beans, broad beans, and sure pickles such as sauerkraut. Ask your doctor about the types of food you should avoid.
Storage Conditions
- Store at 25°C.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
- Do not use Linezolid that is expired or out of date.
